Over $65million donated

throughout our history

At the Hugh Green Foundation we are a firm believer in building long-term resilient partnerships with the organisations we fund. Rather than supporting many and multiple causes the approach is about focusing our giving where it matters most to achieve greater sustainability for organisations over longer periods of time.

Developing strategic, high trust relationships we look to work on projects that will leave a legacy within the organisations we support. This approach means we can work alongside grantees in a collaborative way to ensure we stay agile and relevant, adapting funding and projects as issues and needs emerge. Based on this model we are hugely proud of the organisations we have provided over $65 million in funding since the foundation was established over 20 years ago. Over that time, with our support, our grantees have achieved some truly great things from setting up world first brain research hubs, to developing a world leading medical research cytometry and technology centre, to the funding of ‘HomeGround’ – Auckland City Mission’s impressive new home. At the heart of it all is the importance of family and communities, two fundamental drivers for both the foundation and the man it was named after – Hugh Green.

Advancing Innovative Medical Research

The Foundation has a proud history of supporting innovative medical research including collaborations, new technologies and the creation of hubs of excellence in several varied medical fields. Areas of focus to date include research into rare and terminal childhood diseases, illness and disability, adult and young people’s brain diseases and disorders , mental health, translational neuroscience and addiction.

Reducing Poverty

The Foundation looks to help build capacity in community organisations which are working to assist people and communities out of poverty. Community led/driven initiatives that target reducing stress on families with young children are of interest, as are innovative solutions to increasing availability of affordable housing and increasing community connectedness. To date there’s been particular focus on South Auckland where the foundation has existing relationships with schools and other community groups.

Improving Health Outcomes and Health Equity

The Foundation aims to reduce inequity within the health system by supporting community based/led/owned solutions which offer practical assistance for families/individuals who are suffering through medical and hardship issues. The Foundation looks to connect and integrate initiatives where possible with leading medical research from other grantees resulting in a vibrant sharing of medical research and practice at a community level. Examples include community and outreach programmes offering a variety of health services

Increasing Education Opportunities for our Young Learners

Supporting the development of the ‘Education Partnership and Innovation Trust’ is a focus for most of our current work. EPIT enables collaborative cross-sector partnerships and helps deliver transformative education outcomes for learners throughout New Zealand.
Alongside individual scholarships the Foundation is also engaged in funding innovative solutions and partnerships with transformational initiatives enabling all young learners to thrive.
